I thought this might make for an interesting discussion if anyone is interested in discussing this so...I'll open this topic up by giving my thoughts on this.

The reason I am interested in this topic is because I myself need to generate some income to last until a regular paycheck from a regular job OR to generate enough income to make something my full time job as a self-employed person.

I did window cleaning up north before moving to San Diego a week ago and window cleaning is starting to look somewhat promising for me here but just in case I am keeping my eyes open for something else.

One idea that I thought about is painting house numbers on curve sides. The city comes around once in a while (a very great while by the looks of things) and charges $5 to paint them. Others have done this before and charged $10 or accepted donations.

Here is another one...I was walking around the Gas Lamp quarter last night (really neat place) and I saw this guy with a parrot who was taking pictures of his parrot sitting on the shoulders or arms of people and then printing them a photo "postcard" right there on the spot. I thought that was really neat.

I also saw a woman selling flowers. I know I could do a better job at selling flowers than the woman I saw. She said she was working for someone else and she did not seem very enthused or assertive in what she was doing. Apparently people selling flowers are an acceptable part of the Gas Lamp quarter such that one restaurant fellow was telling me that they just walk right into restaurants and go right up to tables trying to sell flowers and that such is generally okay to do. Hmmm....interesting I thought.

Another idea that someone suggested is a roving body work in your driveway type of thing. There are lots and lots of cars in San Diego and lots of them get dented. The deductible on the insurance is often too high to bother fixing it but if I came around and offered to do it cheap, right in their driveway...well...it seems that some money could be made that way.

I will stick to window cleaning for now. I've never seen so many dirty windows anywhere else but as to whether business owners are willing to pay to have them cleaned here is another story. I already have one business wanting me to do their windows monthly...and one window cleaner told me that they are about as busy as they have ever been. That people get their windows done all year long here. It remains to be seen if I can effectively tap into that doing window cleaning by public transportation. I think I can but we'll see.

Perhaps I will try some of these other ideas or take offs on them. I was looking around at a dollar store today and it dawned on me that I could purchase lots of nice frames and take photos of people, print them out on the spot, and then sell them a photo nicely framed. Or maybe put their photo on a mug (if such could be done on the spot) or something. Still thinking about that one.

Has anyone tried any of these successfully? If so...would you care to share your insight with the rest of us? I am all ears if anyone has ideas or cares to share their ideas or experience with us.

If we could keep this discussion to the topic at hand without going off into why I am choosing to do this sort of thing instead of sitting in some cubicle somewhere working for someone else....well...that would be great .

Carlos

Just an idea on painting the curbs- I saw some homes in the neighborhood nearby who got their curb numbers repainted, but had a little beach scene or whatever painted behind the number. It was just a special little touch but I think some people would really dig something like that, especially if it was only $1 or $2 more than the "standard" numbers. Good luck!

Default Interesting ideas, but ......

Personally I hate it when people bother me at my lunch or dinner table when I'm eating. ......... Alot of other folks feel the same. And there really is no money in it for you selling flowers. You can make much more money for your time washing the windows of wealthy folks in North County !

I doubt seriously anyone will accept the "driveway mechanic" repairs. Most people want some type of written warranty of the repair shop's work. ......... No offence to you, but for all they know, they will never see you again and if the repair is shoddy they are S.O.L.

But once again Carlos, I compliment you on your energy, optimism and resourcefulness.

What you are describing is not only illegal but a well-known scam. The perpetrator paints your number on the curb without asking the homeowner then asks for a donation. Most people just give it to them. It is illegal for anyone other than the city to paint a curb.

The rose-sellers are a nusiance at best and are usually older women who buy a dozen and sell the singles.. hardly any money to be made there.

The quickest way to make money in San Diego is to get a real job, at a place like NASSCO, or in the Navy, or in High-Tech, or other lucrative local industries. Otherwise just get a job in food service washing dishes like the thousands of other transients who wash up in our city every week. An able-bodied man should be figuring out how to get into a union trade instead of wasting time on schemes and scams.

Make twisty balloons at a place where there are a lot of kids like Balboa park or at a shopping mall. Moms would easily give you $1 (Dads will give $2) for a balloon dog and it probably only costs 10 cents to buy the balloon. Really they are just buying something to keep the kid quiet and in that sense maybe they should pay $5 ;^).

As usual...some of you are taking what I say and twisting it to no end. Seems to be a California thing .

As a Christian I would not scam, cheat, or otherwise do any such thing to anyone.

The things I mentioned where ideas only. I have not done any of them with the exception of soliciting for window cleaning. It's called brainstorming to see if there might be some way to offer something of value (even if that value is entertainment) to make an honest buck. Such brainstorming and initiative along with a willingness to work hard are among the things that made this country great once upon a time.

If all some of you want to do is work for someone else and never take hold of whatever possibilities are out there to do something different and perhaps more rewarding...that's your choice...but it does not happen to be mine.

If some of you want to keep assuming and thinking the worst about me or my motives...be my guest. But I would love to hear from anyone that wants to brainstorm with me about honest ways to make some quick money in San Diego.

Too funny - some years ago a bunch of ladies from the church I was attending at the time went around volunteering to paint numbers on people's curbs in Chula Vista as an "act of kindness" (they took no money)--they probably did at least 10-15 in a few hours. Obviously, they were clueless that it was illegal

Carlos

It seems to me that this discussion has a definite "either or" element -- either be an entrepreneur or work for the "system" - I am relocating to SD in 8 weeks and my plan is to get a regular job, pursue my entrepreneurial goals at nights and on weekends, and when my business takes off and I can no longer afford to work for someone else I will go to work full time for my self. But in the meantime the bills are getting paid and I am making contacts, networking, etc.

Carlos, I applaud your independent spirit but coming to SD and pursuing full-on manual labor type business for yourself does seem a hard way to go. I also dont believe "quick" and "money" should be used in the same sentence but thats just me.
